Study of potential air emissions of PCBs, HCB and dioxins from thermal processes offshore; Utredning av mulige utslipp til luft av PCB, HCB og dioksiner fra termiske prosesser offshore

Abstract

Chlorinated aromatic compounds PCBs, HCB and PCDD / F are persistent in nature. They are fat-soluble, accumulate in the food chain and can cause severe health damage. Environmental authorities want a better overview of air emissions of these chemical groups in the oil and gas activities on the Norwegian continental shelf. As part of this goal, a study of relevant available literature and information obtained from industry-keeping and other sources is performed. The work has shown that the quantification of PCBs, HCB and dioxins in emissions from thermal processes associated with the production of oil and gas on the Norwegian continental shelf is slightly uncertain, mainly because few relevant data in the literature. The same uncertainty, however, affect similar and other types of land-based sources. Based on emission factors from comparable industries and from the nature of the process, evaluated the emissions of chlorinated aromatics from the offshore industry to be low. The industry operates a systematic effort to limit emissions of other pollutants Tii air. These measures normally means a reduction of chlorinated aromatics. (AG)
