Neutron and X-ray scattering to study defects, phase transitions and interfaces; Neutronen- und Roentgenstreuung zur Untersuchung von Defekten, Phasenuebergaengen und Grenzflaechen; Schlussbericht

Abstract

This report covers the short version of three projects: TP 1 `` Defect correlations after neutron irradiation`` - Measurements of diffuse X-ray scattering at metals after low-temperature irradiation with reactor neutrons have yielded quantitative information on correlations both of interstitial atoms and vacancies in the defect cascade. TP 2 ``Hydrogen in metals`` - By means of neutron and X-ray scattering methods, in particular the macroscopic hydrogen density modes at NbH{sub x} and NbO{sub y}D{sub x} were detected. By means of the orientation glass (KBr){sub 1-x}(KCN){sub x} the structure and dynamics of elastic CN{sup -} dipoles were explored. Other subjects studied were: 1. Quasi-elastic line spread of coherent and incoherent neutron scattering of D in Nb. 2. Diffuse scattering at NbO{sub x} and NbO{sub x}D{sub y} between room temperature and 10 K. 3. Influence of O on the phase diagram of D in Nb. 4. Temperature dependence of the static Debye-Waller factor in the system TaN{sub x}. TP 3 ``Total reflexion scattering`` - Total reflexion scattering has systematically been developed into a surface-sensitive measuring technique which has made it possible to obtain quantitative depth profiles of scattering intensities. That was possible by exact external control of glancing angles of incidence and  More>>

TP 3 ``Total reflexion scattering`` - Total reflexion scattering has systematically been developed into a surface-sensitive measuring technique which has made it possible to obtain quantitative depth profiles of scattering intensities. That was possible by exact external control of glancing angles of incidence and deflection ({alpha}{sub i} and {alpha}{sub f}), and by using position sensitive detectors. Doing that, depth profiles of scattering of between 20 Aand several 100 Awere produced. (orig.) [Deutsch] TP 1 ``Defektkorrelationen nach Neutronenbestrahlung``: Messungen der diffusen Roentgenstreuung an Metallen nach Tieftemperaturbestrahlung mit Reaktorneutronen haben quantitative Informationen ueber die Korrelation sowohl von Zwischengitteratomen als auch von Leerstellen in der Defektkaskade gegeben. TP 2 ``Wasserstoff in Metallen``: Mit Neutronen- und Roentgenstreumethoden wurden insbesondere die makroskopischen Wasserstoffdichtemoden an NbH{sub x} und NbO{sub y}D{sub x} nachgewiesen. Am Orientierungsglas (KBR){sub 1-x}(KCN){sub x} wurde Struktur und Dynamik der elastischen CN{sup -} Dipole aufgeklaert. Weiter wurde untersucht: 1. Quasielastische Linienverbreiterung der kohaerenten und inkohaerenten Neutronenstreuung von D in Nb. 2. Diffuse Streuung an NbO{sub x} und NbO{sub x}D{sub y} zwischen Raumtemperatur und 10K. 3. Einfluss von O auf das Phasendiagramm von D in Nb. 4. Die Temperaturabhaengigkeit des statischen Debye-Waller-Faktors am System TaN{sub x}. TP 3 ``Totalreflexionsstreuung`` Die Totalreflexionsstreuung wurde systematisch zu einer oberflaechensensitiven Messmethode entwickelt, mit der es moeglich wurde, quantitative Tiefenprofile der Streuintensitaeten zu gewinnen. Dies gelang durch die genaue externe Kontrolle der streifenden Ein- und Ausfallswinkel ({alpha}{sub i} und {alpha}{sub f}) und dem Einsatz von ortsempfindlichen Detektoren. Dabei wurden Tiefenprofile der Streuung zwischen 20Aund mehreren 100Aerzeugt. Dieses Messverfahren wurde mittlerweile auf eine Vielzahl von Problemstellungen aus dem Bereich der Oberflaechenphysik von Phasenuebergaengen und Schichtsystemen angewandt. (orig.)}
