Abstract
The Danish government published ``Energi 2000 - handlingsplan for en baeredygtig udvikling`` (Energy 2000 - plan of management for a sustainable development) in 1990. This comprised the government`s plan of management within the field of energy covering the following years. Its main aim was to secure a significant reduction of pollution by the energy system (especially in the case of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) without endangering the reliability of supply or energy efficiency, and without weakening the energy system in any way. It was also decided to increase the use of cogeneration, natural gas and less pollutive fuels. This policy is elaborated, and the resulting status regarding the realization of the planned initiatives is discussed. The subject areas dealt with are energy demands in relation to new buildings, the development of cogeneration plants, windmill economy, the conversion of biomass to methane, oil and natural gas recovery and the development of renewable energy resources. The organization of the Danish energy sector and perspectives for Danish energy research are also described. The subject of the influence of the Single Market is dealt with in relation to the Danish energy sector. Statistical data on Denmark`s energy consumption, energy supply, and pollutive emission
