Shape memory effect alloys; Ligas de efeito de memoria de forma

Abstract

Although the pseudo- or super-elasticity phenomena and the shape memory effect were known since the 1940`s, the enormous curiosity and the great interest to their practical applications emerged with the development of the NITINOL alloy (Nickel-Titanium Naval Ordance Laboratory) by the NASA during the 1960`s. This fact marked the appearance of a new class of materials, popularly known as shape memory effect alloys (SMEA). The objective of this work is to present a state-of-the-art of the development and applications for the SMEA. (E.O.).
