Abstract

The Institute consists of three parts IMF I, IMF II and IMF III. The tasks are divided into applied material physics (IMF I), material and structural mechanics (IMF II) and material process technology (IMF III). IMF I works preferably on the development of metallic, non-metallic and compound materials and on questions of the structure and properties of boundary surfaces and surface protection coatings. The main work of IMF II is the reliability of components, failure mechanics and the science of damage. IMF III examines process technology questions in the context of the manufacture of ceramic materials and fusion materials and the design of nuclear components. The Institute works on various main points of the Kernforschungszentrum in its research work, particularly in nuclear fusion, micro-system technique, nuclear safety research, superconductivity and in processes with little harmful substances and waste. Material and strength problems for future fusion reactors and fission reactors, in powerful micro systems and safety-related questions of nuclear technology are examined. Also, research not bound to projects in the field of metallic, ceramic and polymer materials for high stresses is carried out. (orig.) Die Aufgabengebiete gliedern sich in Angewandte Werkstoffphysik (IMF I), Werkstoff- und Strukturmechanik (IMF II) und Werkstoff-Prozesstechnik (IMF III). Das IMF I arbeitet hierbei bevorzugt an der Entwicklung von metallischen, nicht-metallischen und Verbundwerkstoffen sowie an Fragen der Struktur und Eigenschaften von Grenzflaechen und Oberflaechenschutzschichten. Schwerpunktmaessig behandelt das IMF II die Zuverlaessigkeit von Komponenten, Versagensmechanik und Schadenskunde. Das IMF III untersucht verfahrenstechnische Fragestellungen im Rahmen der Herstellung von keramischen Werkstoffen und Fusionsbrutstoffen und die Auslegung kerntechnischer Komponenten. An den verschiedenen Arbeitsschwerpunkten des Kernforschungszentrums wirkt das Institut mit seinen Forschungsarbeiten besonders in der Kernfusion, Mikrosystemtechnik, Nuklearen Sicherheitsforschung, der Supraleitung, sowie bei den schadstoff- und abfallarmen Verfahren mit. Es werden Material- und Festigkeitsprobleme fuer zukuenftige Fusionsreaktoren und fuer Kernspaltungsreaktoren, in hochleistungsfaehigen Mikrosystemen, sowie sicherheitsrelevante Fragen der Kerntechnik untersucht. Weiterhin werden nicht projektgebundene Forschungen auf dem Gebiet metallischer, keramischer und polymerer Werkstoffe fuer hohe Beanspruchungen betrieben. (orig.)}
