Abstract
In this report the benefits of plastics are briefly surveyed and the state of plastics material recycling in the UK is reviewed. Different options for dealing with plastics waste are discussed in order to put material recycling in perspective, and current sources of government support for developing plastics recycling activities are outlined. This report quatifies the most optimistic case for energy saving through recycling: the direct replacement of virgin bulk polymer by an equal quantity of recycled bulk polymer. The report identifies the need for more research, development and demonstration of recycling methodology, new recycling technology and whole recycling plants, and concludes that the absence of an adequate plastics waste collection strategy is the most limiting aspect to the expansion of recycling efforts at present.
