Investigation of Peierls barriers for Frenkel-Kontorova dislocation (soliton) in a discrete atomic chain of finite length; Issledovanie bar`erov Pajerlsa dlya dislokatsii (solitona) Frenkelya-Kontorovoj v diskretnoj atomnoj tsepochke konechnoj dliny

Abstract

The properties of potential relief for the Frenkel-Kontorova dislocation soliton in a discrete atomic chain of finite length with fixed or free bounds are studied analytically and by computer simulation. It is found that in a finite-length chain all or part of Peierls barriers may vanish. Under the action of a uniform constant external force the Peierls barriers are displaced along the chain, but their amplitudes are practically not changed. 20 refs.; 14 figs.; 3 tabs.
