Abstract
Electron impact excitation of Be I (neutral Beryllium and Chromium are considered in this paper). The R-matrix method has been used to obtain collision strengths for e - Be I scattering for transitions between the n = 2, 3 and 4 levels. Three types of calculation have been made. Firstly, a 12-state calculation was carried out with exchange and with inclusion of all the n = 2 and 3 levels, for impact energies from threshold to 7 Ryd. Secondly, this 12-state calculation was repeated except that exchange was omitted. Finally, a 20-state no-exchange calculation including all n = 2, 3 and 4 levels was carried out for energies from threshold to 4 Ryd. The target-states in all three calculations were obtained using optimised configuration interaction expansions. (author).
