Participation in the HRI coal/oil co-processing program. Final report; Beteiligung am HRI-Coprocessing-Programm. Abschlussbericht

Abstract

The object of the programme is testing and continued development of the simultaneous conversion of coal and residual oil. The technology being developed is the HRI Coal/Oi l Co-Processing Technology based on two-stage catalytic, ebullated-bed processing. According to the objectives of the application for subsidy the main of the investigations was to demonstrate the viability of the simultaneous hydrogenation of different combinations of residual oils and coals yielding valuable distillate oils. Maya AR + VR, Cold Lake and Hondo residuum were processed with lignite, sub-bituminous coals and the high volatile bituminous Westerholt coal. Except for minor problems smooth operations were experienced without any precipitation of asphaltenes or coking evaluating the co-processing performance of different feed-stock combinations. High 524deg C{sup +} conversion rates of > 90% and high liquid product yields of > 80% were achieved. The data base for scale-up purposes was considerably expanded. A commercial assessment of the HRI Co-Processing Technology can be implemented on the basis of the obtained results. A conceptual commercial plant design was performed. (orig.) (orig.)
