Oil activity entries the north; Oljevirksomhetens inntog i nord

Abstract

The Norwegian oil and gas industry started in the North Sea and has so far primarily been studied in a national perspective. In recent years the emphasis has shifted northward with rising petroleum activity in the Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea. Drilling north of 62 latitude was a long time very controversial. The public debate is currently characterized by clear fronts, where the petroleum development in the north is said to cause either a blessing or damnation. In this book, we want to go behind the front lines and into the cross-country debate is about. We look at oil and gas industry's encounter with a new region and Northern Norway's meeting with a new type of business activity. The book is therefore about the opening of a new petroleum province, regional economic development, governance and the prospects for a key sector in the Norwegian economy. At the same time, it is about the shows and the controversies that are helping to shape the oil and gas operations.
