The development of SiC whisker fabrication technology for nuclear applications

Abstract

Some important experiments for whisker growth reactions, fabrication processes, and experiments for fabricarion of whisker reinforced composites have been performed. In order to investigate growth reaction of SiC whiskers, a conventional carbothermic reaction was tested. Based on the results of carbothermic process, a new process called silicothermic reaction was planned and some basic experiments were performed. Reaction characteristics of silicon monoxide, core material for SiC whisker growth in both of the reactions were investigated for basic data. Additionally, a hydrofluoric acid leaching process was tested for developing SiC whisker recovery process, and powder metallurgy process and melt sqeeze process were tried to develop aluminum-SiC whisker composites.
