Studies on the space-drift time relation in the inhomogeneous magnetic field in the planar drift chambers of the ZEUS detector; Untersuchungen zur Orts-Driftzeit-Beziehung im inhomogenen Magnetfeld in den planaren Driftkammern des ZEUS-Detektors

Thesis/Dissertation:

Abstract

The ZEUS-detector at the electron-proton-collider HERA at DESY in Hamburg contains planar drift chambers (FTDs and RTD) in the proton forward and rear direction. These particle tracking devices will operate in a strong and highly inhomogeneous magnetic field (gradient up to 3 T/m), because they are located at both ends of the coil of the superconducting solenoid. The space drifttime relation (SDR) depends significantly on the relative configuration of the magnetic and electric field, i.e. it depends on the position of a track inside the chambers and on its angle of incidence. In this paper we study symmetries of the SDR throughout the chambers. We give a detailed description of the magnetic field measurements in the inner tracking region of the ZEUS-detector. We numerically study the effects of magnetic field measurement uncertainties on the SDR. In order to exploit the full spatial resolution of 100 {mu}m, we need to know the field with an accuracy of 0.005 T in the regions of FTD1 and RTD and with 0.01 T in the regioins of FTD2 and FTD3. Finally we study a three dimensional parametrization of the SDR. We obtain a parametrization fullfilling the required criteria of accuracy, which allows a fast  More>>

Finally we study a three dimensional parametrization of the SDR. We obtain a parametrization fullfilling the required criteria of accuracy, which allows a fast computation of the drift time as a function of the three basic parameters: the position of a track along the wire, the distance to the wire and the angle of incidence. (orig.). [Deutsch] Im Rahmen dieser Diplomarbeit wird die Korrelation zwischen den Driftzeiten und dem Ort einer Teilchenspur in einer Zelle im inhomogenen Magnetfeld in dem Bereich der planaren Driftkammern untersucht. Dabei werden drei verschiedene Aspekte behandelt: Zunaechst wird untersucht, ob sich im axialsymmetrischen Magnetfeld des zentralen Solenoiden symmetrische ODBs finden lassen. Es zeigt sich, dass durch Umkehrung des Staggering, in einer Haelfte einer Zellage eine Punktsymmetrie in den Driftkammern vorliegt. Die Konsequenz dieser Untersuchungen ist, dass beim Bau der Kammern das Staggering umgedreht wurde. Im Vorfeld der Magnetfeldmessung wurde untersucht, wie genau in den planaren Driftkammern das Magnetfeld bekannt sein muss, damit die angestrebte Ortsaufloesung in den Kammern erreicht werden kann. Die Berechnungen ergeben hier, dass in FTD1 und RTD eine Genauigkeit von 0.005 T erforderlich ist und in den Kammern von FTD2/3 0.01 T. Die ODB ist laengs einer Zelle wegen der Inhomogenitaet des Magnetfelds im Bereich der planaren Driftkammer nicht konstant. Hier wird untersucht, wie sich die Aenderungen der Driftzeiten entlang eines Signaldrahtes beschreiben lassen. Dieses Problem wird durch eine Parametrisierung der Driftzeiten mit algebraischen Polynomen in Abhaengigkeit von den drei Supraparametern (z, d, {Theta}) geloest. Die approximierten Funktionen stellen eine Moeglichkeit dar, zu gegebenen Ortsinformationen in einer Zelle Driftzeiten zu berechnen. (orig./HSI).}
