Abstract

The passivation layers formed by the oxidizing corrosion of high temperature alloys consist primarily of oxides and mixed oxides of the elements chromium, manganese and titanium. For a reproducible formation and characterization of such oxide layers it is necessary to know the phase equilibria of these oxide systems at temperature and oxygen partial pressure conditions which will be relevant during their application. For the investigation of the quasi-ternary system Cr-Mn-Ti-oxide, oxide powders were prepared and annealed at 1000deg C under different oxygen partial pressures ranging from 0.21 bar to 10{sup -21} bar. Phase identification and determination of lattice parameter using X-ray diffraction analysis as well as the direct measurement of phase boundaries as a function of oxygen partial pressure using the emf-methode were carried out for these investigations. In the quasi-ternary system Cr-Mn-Ti-oxide the spinels play a decisive role in the oxigen partial pressure range examined. The spinel MnCr{sub 2}O{sub 4} may be regarded as the most significant compound. Part of the chronium can be replaced by trivalent manganese at high oxygen partial pressures and by trivalent titanium at low pressures, and the formation of a solid solution with the spinel Mn{sub 2}TiO{sub 4} is possible in all cases. [Deutsch] Die passivierenden Schichten, die sich bei der oxidierenden Korrosion von hochwarmfesten Legierungen bilden, bestehen hauptsaechlich aus Oxiden bzw. Mischoxiden der Elemente Chrom, Mangan und Titan. Fuer die reproduzierbare Bildung und Charakterisierung solcher Oxidschichten ist die Kenntnis der Phasengleichgewichte der entsprechenden oxidischen Systeme bei den fuer die Anwendung in Frage kommenden Temperaturen und Sauerstoffpartialdruecken erforderlich. Zur Untersuchung des quasi-ternaeren Systems Cr-Mn-Ti-Oxid wurden Oxidpulver erzeugt und bei 1000deg C unter verschiedenen Sauerstoffpartialdruecken im Bereich zwischen 0,21 bar und 10{sup -21} bar angelassen. Die Untersuchung erfolgte mittels roentgendifraktometrischer Phasen- und Gitterparameterbestimmungen sowie durch die direkte Messung von Phasengrenzen in Abhaengigkeit von Sauerstoffpartialdruck mit der EMK-Methode. Im quasi-ternaeren System Cr-Mn-Ti-Oxid spielen die Spinelle eine massgebliche Rolle im gesamten untersuchten Sauerstoffpartialdruckbereich. Als zentrale Verbindung kann der Spinell MnCr{sub 2}O{sub 4} angesehen werden. Ein Teil des Chroms im Spinell kann bei hohen Sauerstoffpartialdruecken durch dreiwertiges Mangan und bei niedrigen Druecken durch dreiwertiges Titan substituiert werden, und in allen Faellen ist die Bildung eines Mischkristalls mit dem Spinell Mn{sub 2}TiO{sub 4} moeglich.
