Abstract
BIOENERGIA-Bioenergy Research Programme is one of the energy technology research programs of the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry. The program will be carried out during 1993-98. The aim of the program is to increase the utilization of economically profitable and environmentally-sound bioenergy by improving the competitiveness of present peat and wood fuels. R and D projects will also develop new economically competitive biofuels and new equipment and methods for production, handling and utilization of biofuels. The main research areas are: production of wood fuels, peat production, utilization of bioenergy and conversion of biomass. The most important area of investigation within the research on wood fuel production is the development of various methods, machines and systems connected to this area, in order to produce economically competitive fuel. Integrated harvesting appears to have the most promising potential in this area. The central research focuses in peat production research are the utilization of all the peat available in a bog and the development of peat production methods and machines. Development work in this area aims at decreasing the production costs and also at decreasing of the waste water and other elements of environmental load around the peat production sites. In the long
