Abstract
Methods for characterising coarse refiner mechanical pulps which are produced at low energy application were studied. The characterization of the fibrous material during the initial stages of wood disintegration may provide a better insight on the mechanism of chip breakdown. Preliminary work indicates that separation of shives and fibres by screening and subsequent analysis of these two separate fractions can form the basis of a characterization procedure
