Abstract
An experimental study of the rare decays K{sub L}{sup 0}{yields}{mu}e, K{sub L}{sup 0}{yields}ee, and K{sub L}{sup 0}{yields}{mu}{mu} was performed at the KEK 12-GeV Proton Synchrotron. No event was observed in the fiducial region for the decay K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}e. There was one event in the fiducial region for the decay K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} ee, which was indistinguishable from the background. Normalizing to the decay K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, the upper limits on the branching ratios at 90% confidence level were B(K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}e) < 9.4 x 10{sup -11} and B(K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} ee) < 1.6 x 10{sup -10}. We observed 179 K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{mu} events in the fiducial region, and the branching ratio B(K{sub L}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{mu}) = [7.9 {+-} 0.6(stat) {+-} 0.3(syst)] x 10{sup -9} was obtained.
