Modified lattice QED with staggered fermions

Abstract

The phase structure of compact lattice QED modified by a suppression of lattice artifacts is investigated with staggered fermions in the quenched approximation. We show that the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the standard theory is due to lattice artifacts. ((orig.)).
