Abstract
The structure of the Lignocellulosic materials and the chemical composition of their main constitutive polymers, cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin are described. The most promising transformation processes according to the type of biomass considered: hardwood, softwood and herbaceous materials as well as the mechanisms for lignin biodegradation and the perspectives of biotechnological processes for biopulping, biobleaching and effluents decolorization in the paper pulp industry are also discussed.
