Abstract

Calcium carbonate-cemented beach sands or beach rocks have been observed to occur in the inter tidal zone of many tropical beaches. Near Salvador (Brazil) occurrences are found in several locations on the island of Itaparica. A study of the stable isotope composition (C{sup 13} / C{sup 12} and O{sup 18} / O{sup 16}) of the cement and the local groundwater was carried out to determine the origin of the carbonate cement.
