Wave theory of charged beam propagation

Abstract

Using a recent quantum mechanical treatment of charged beam propagation in which the emittance plays the role of Planck`s constant, this paper constructs a wave theory of the beam transport along guiding systems. It shows that the distribution of a beam passing through quadrupole lenses can be described in terms of gaussian beams; discusses the role of Twiss parameters within this context; and derives an ABCD law for charged beam transport.
