On the generation of large-amplitude plasma wakefields with low phase velocities by an intense short laser pulse

Abstract

The problem of propagating large-amplitude laser pulses through plasmas has many unresolved issues. One of them is a group velocity of such pulses. We demonstrate that Gaussian pulses with lower amplitudes and lower group velocities are able to generate the wakefields having greater amplitudes than wakefields produced by Gaussian pulses with higher amplitudes but phase velocities close to the speed of light.
