Abstract
The total area of the Finnish peatlands is approximately 9,3 million hectares. The area of peatlands without draining is 4,1 million hectares. In Finland the most common use of peatlands is in the forestry and agriculture sectors, in the protection of peatlands and in the peat production. In the peat production the active area is approx. 60 000 hectares. According to the Geological Survey of Finland the potential of the area technically suitable for peat production is more than 1,2 million hectares. The energy content of the area suitable for peat production is estimated to 12 800 TWh. Based on calculations of the use from the last years the peat resources will be sufficient for the next five hundred years
