Biological effect monitoring using Dreissena polymorpha at the measuring station Schnackenburg; Biologisches Effektmonitoring mit der Dreikantmuschel Dreissena polymorpha in der Messstation Schnackenburg

Abstract

Within the framwork of an ARGE-ELBE special measuring programme, active biomonitoring was done in the river Elbe near Schnackenburg using Dreissena polymorpha. This pilot programme had the following particular objectives: To verify in how far Dreissena polymorpha is suitable as a monitoring organism in the river Elbe. To gain knowledge on the time distribution of specific pollutant uptake as well as on the magnitude and variability of pollutant accumulations attained during a longer period of exposure. With reference to the corresponding pollutant concentrations in the compartments water and suspended particles, Elbe-specific enrichment factors in organisms were to be estimated. A routine measuring programme was to be developed. Histological checks conducted in parallel were to clarify whether experimental upkeep of mussels in the water of the river Elbe provokes changes at the cellular level that are due to toxic stress. As the study revealed, D.polymorpha is suited for biomonitoring. The investigated pollutants actually were enriched in the soft parts of the muscle in varying degrees. In order to minimize sub-lethal effects which might impair the mussel`s accumulation capacity, exposure time should be short. But seasonal differences, which became obvious especially for chlorinated hydrocarbons, must be taken into account. (orig./MG). [Deutsch] Im  More>>

[Deutsch] Im Rahmen eines ARGE-ELBE-Sondermessprogramms wurde ein aktives Biomonitoring in der Elbe bei Schnackenburg betrieben, wobei die Dreikantmuschel Dreissena polymorpha verwendet wurde. Mit diesem Pilotprojekt wurden insbesondere folgende Zielvorstellungen verbunden: Es sollte geprueft werden, inwieweit sich Dreissena polymorpha als Monitoring-Organismus in der Elbe eignet. Es sollten Erkenntnisse gesammelt werden ueber den zeitlichen Verlauf der spezifischen Schadstoffaufnahme sowie ueber die Hoehe und Variabilitaet der innerhalb eines laengeren Expositionszeitraumes erreichten Schadstoffgehalte. Im Zusammenhang mit den entsprechenden Schadstoffkonzentrationen in den Kompartimenten Wasser und Schwebstoff sollten elbspezifische Anreicherungsfaktoren im Organismus abgeschaetzt werden. Es sollte ein Routine-Messprogramm entwickelt werden. Parallel durchgefuehrte histologische Untersuchungen sollten klaeren, ob eine experimentelle Haelterung der Muschel im Elbwasser auf zellulaerer Ebene Veraenderungen hervorruft, die auf Schadstoffbelastungen zurueckzufuehren sind. Die Studie zeigt, dass D.polymorpha fue ein Biomonitoring geeignet ist. Die untersuchten Schadstoffe wurden in mehr oder weniger starkem Masse im Muschelweichkoerper angereichert. Um subletale, die Akkumulationsfaehigkeit moeglicherweise beeintraechtigende Effekte zu minimieren, sollte die Expositionszeit moeglichst kurz sein. Die vor allem bei den CKW deutlich gewordene Saisonalitaet ist hierbei allerdings zu beruecksichtigen. (orig./MG).}
