Abstract
Energywood from South-Savo project studied and developed large-scale procurement of small-sized energywood in South-Savo region in Finland. The potential of small-sized wood as an energy resource is promising because of good availability of biomass and forest-owners willingness to produce and sell it, development of harvesting technology, diversity of logistical solutions and growth of forest-based fuel demand. The project included the following sub-studies: energy balance of South-Savo, a questionnaire for forest-owners, an interview of energywood procurement specialists, a simulation study of forest management, availability analyses of forest fuels, a follow-up study of energywood moisture content, logistical demonstrations and cost-analyses of energywood supply chains. The project focused on the value chain of small-sized energywood from forest management to the final use of energy. The results of the project show potential of small-sized energywood as a resource for large-scale energy use as long as the supply chain is continuously improved by increasing effectiveness and quality.
