North West Shelf running hot for gas

Abstract

The Carnarvon Basin, part of the North West Shelf in Western Australia, is being targeted by Victoria Petroleum NL for natural gas exploration. The Basin has a ready infrastructure with supply bases and availability of rigs. The company`s leverage into the region came through its joint venture interest in Bellerophon an off-shore prospect which commenced drilling in June 1994. Prospects held by the company in the Otway Basin have had a 60% success rate from the last round of drilling in 1993 and it is believed that it could be a new gas province. New seismic techniques are being used in exploration and have proved successful. The company plans to drill two wells in the next four months on its North West Shelf joint ventures. photo.
