Abstract
Power generation from the $70 million Ord River hydroelectric project, described as the largest application of renewable energy in Western Australia, is expected to begin next January. Construction is on schedule for the 30-megawatt station being built adjacent to the main dam on Lake Argyle. The project involves a partnership between Pacific Hydro Ltd and Lend Lease Corp. which has signed agreements to supply Western Power with electricity at Kununurra for 25 years and the Argyle Diamond Mine for a minimum of seven years from 1996. The energy produced by the Ord project is expected to exceed the combined output of seven hydro power projects at existing dams in the eastern States.(author). photos.
