Abstract
Gamma radiation induced decomposition of aqueous sodium and potassium nitrate solutions have been studied over a wide concentration range 1 mM to 1 M and at various doses. At low concentrations G(NO{sub 2}{sup -}) values are enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude. The results have been explained in terms of the interaction of primary radiolytic products of water with NO{sub 3}{sup -}or its radical species. Effect of cations and absorbed dose is also discussed. (author). 9 refs., 2 figs.
