Redox reactions of azulene-{beta}-cyclodextrin inclusion complex

Abstract

Redox reactions of azulene (AZ) with H{sup .}, {sup .}OH, e{sub aq}{sup -} and N{sub 3}{sup .} in aqueous medium were studied using the technique of pulse radiolysis and the results were compared with AZ-{beta}-cyclodextrin ({beta}-CD) complex in water. In the latter case ({beta}-CD/AZ complex) the lifetime of AZ{sub aq}{sup -}increased by an order and AZ{sup +} absorbance showed 50% increase with N{sub 3}{sup .} as the oxidant.
