Radiation chemical oxidation of substituted benzenes by Cl{sub 2}{sup .-}

Abstract

Reaction of Cl{sub 2}{sup .-} radical with chloro, methyl and methoxylated benzenes was studied by pulse radiolysis in acidic condition. The rate of Cl{sub 2}{sup .-} reaction with chlorobenzene, toluene and chlorotoluene was lower (0.8 - 15 x 10{sup 6} dm{sup 3} mol{sup -1} s{sup -1}), however, formation of radical cations was observed only with anisole and 3-chloroanisole where Cl{sub 2}{sup .-} radical reacts with the higher rates of 3.4 and 2.1 x 10{sup 8} dm{sup 3} mol{sup -1} s{sup -1} respectively.
