<dc:description>The increased deposition of nitrogen oxides may shift the acidity balance between sulfur and nitrogen in limnie systems under various conditions. A simplified description of the flow of hydrogen ions in connection with the conversion of nitrogen is given. It is concluded that the internal processes of the acid water sources have very little influence on the magnitude of the flow of hydrogen ions. The increased deposition of nitrogen compounds may thus influence the acidity of the system owing to the action on surrounding soils and acid drainage.</dc:description>
