TY - JOUR TI - HVDC transmission preferred to 750 kV ac AB - It is unlikely that there will be a need in Britain for ac transmission voltages above 400 kV. But with the growing load density in the large conurbations with no possibility of local generation, high voltage dc transmission is likely to be most useful. It was concluded that by 1971 the 400 kV supergrid would be nation-wide and 6,200 circuit miles should be in service. With the expansion to accommodate the large new generating stations, the 400 kV supergrid would become an extremely high power distribution network rather than a transmission system. A higher voltage for transmission is outside the rational limit of speculation for a country the size of Britain.
