	       <dc:description>Evidence that nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide emission are important contributors to acid deposition has lead to control legislation being proposed. The priority at EPRI is to ensure that utilities will have the flexibility of applying a variety of NO/sub x/ reduction technologies to achieve effective control at the lowest possible cost and with the highest possible reliability. The proposed legislation includes requirements for retrofitting abatement technologies on fossil-fuel fired plants built before the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) went into effect in 1971. NO/sub x/ reduction in US power plants constructed after 1971 has relied on furnaces incorporating combustion modification and/or cleaning of flue gas. EPRI is mounting a demonstration program involving combustion modification technologies that can be retrofitted on the four major pre-NSPS boiler types. Extensive tests on a pilot-scale selective catalytic reduction system for flue gas cleaning are also being sponsored by EPRI using its Arapahoe test facility.</dc:description>
