TY - JOUR TI - Mucous flow and ciliary activity in the trachea of rats exposed to pulmonary irritant gas AB - Tracheal mucous secretion was increased in rats exposed to 10 ppM SO/sub 2/, 6 hr/day for 10 weeks. Mucous transport was decreased from 13.5 to 5 mm/min although ciliary beat remained a constant 1320 beats/min. The mucous layer was 5 times as thick as the normal ..mu..m. Histologically, cilia were generally unaffected whereas tracheal epithelium was irregular with deep crypts, and the lamina propria showed severe edema, fragmentation of collagen fibrils, and profuse vascularization with blood escaping perivascularly.
