  "description" : "Atmospheric deposition is the main input of plant nutrients and acidifying elements in Danish forest ecosystems. The aim was to investigate the significance of acid and base-cation deposition to forest health with emphasis on districts where Norwegian spruce and European beech grow, at Frederiksborg, Ulborg and Lindet. Soil water samplers, litter traps, throughfall and stem flow collectors were used. District bulk precipitation, gas and aerosols measurement were located at stands. Ozone levels were found to be highest in the summer. The critical level (7-hour daily mean of 25 ppb) was almost constantly exceeded in April, May and June. An hourly excess above 40 ppb was calculated during 1986-93. Effects on the trees can be expected. Annual sulphur deposition during 1992-93 was measured at 0.8 - 1.1 g S/m{sup 2} at Ulborg, 1.1 - 1.6 g S/m{sup 2} at Frederiksborg and 1.1 - 1.3 g S/m{sup 2} at Lindet. The first figure in each case is based on wet plus dry deposition and the second figure on throughfall value. The annual sum of wet and dry deposition of nitrogen compounds was measured during 1992/93 as 2.2 g N/m{sup 2} at Ulborg, 2.1 g N/m{sup 2} at Frederiksborg and 4.3 g N/m{sup 2} at Lindet. In some areas atmospheric nitrogen deposition is affected by ammonia emitted from local agricultural activities. Possible re-emission of ammonia from the forest area is not taken into account. 8 years of measurement of throughfall sulphur deposition at Ulborg and Frederiksborg shows a decreasing tendency, at Ulborg 0.10 g S/m{sup 2} (R{sup 2} = 0.8), and at Frederiksborg 0.11 g S/m{sup 2} (R{sup 2} = 0.5).
