WHO-Zentrum zur Ueberwachung der Luftguete und Bekaempfung der Luftverschmutzung]; Nitz, G [Landesumweltamt Nordrhein-Westfalen, Essen (Germany)] 54 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES; AIR QUALITY; SULFUR DIOXIDE; NITROGEN OXIDES; AIR POLLUTION MONITORING; INTERLABORATORY COMPARISONS; MEASURING METHODS; EUROPE; QUALITY ASSURANCE; CALIBRATION Sixteen institutes used the opportunity to compare their measuring equipment (11 manual methods and 11 monitors) during two European Intercomparison Workshops on Air Quality Monitoring (SO{sub 2}, NO, NO{sub 2}) at the laboratory of the State Environmental Agency of North-Rhine Westphalia from 4 to 8 July and from 19 to 23 September, 1994 in Essen, Germany. Nearly all the results of the participants were in a range of +/-10% from the target value. This is a clear indication that it is feasible to attain sound results in measuring trace amounts of substances by carrying through suitable independent calibrations and not exclusively by using certified reference materials (CRM). Problems of NO{sub 2} calibration are discussed. All methods used can be recommended as suitable for future air quality measurements in the WHO European Region, with regard to a continuation of a harmonization process. (orig.)
