<dc:description>Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is used as a sensitive technique for the multielemental trace analysis of small amounts of ancient papyrus samples. In order to prepare a homogeneous target for LA-ICP-MS measurements the inhomogeneous papyrus sample (only 20 mg was available) was fused with a lithium borate mixture (90% Li{sub 2}B{sub 4}O{sub 7}, 10% LiBO{sub 2}) at 1050 degree C in a Pt-Au crucible. Two commercial laser ablation systems (LSX 200 from CETAC and LUV 266 from Merchantek) were coupled to a quadrupole-based ICP-MS (Elan 6000, Perkin Elmer) and a double-focusing sector field ICP-MS (Plasma X 2, JEOL), respectively-solution-based calibration in LA-ICP-Ms by direct coupling of an ultrasonic nebulizers with the laser ablation chamber was applied to obtain quantitative data.</dc:description>
