Abstract

Processable electrically conductive latex polymer compositions including colloidal particles of an oxidized, polymerized amino-substituted aromatic monomer, a stabilizing effective amount of a random copolymer containing amino-benzene type moieties as side chain constituents, and dopant anions, and a method of preparing such polymer compositions are provided.

A catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for a fuel cell was prepared by pyrolyzing a mixture of polyaniline, cyanamide, carbon black, and a non-precious metal salt under an inert atmosphere. The pyrolyzed product was treated to remove acid soluble components and then pyrolyzed again. The resulting powder was used to prepare a cathode for a membrane electrode assembly that was used in a fuel cell. When iron(III) chloride was used as the salt, the resulting catalyst was porous with a web-shaped structure. Stable, concentrated solutions of high-molecular weight polyaniline using amines as gel inhibitors. Certain amine compounds (gel inhibitors) are used to form highly concentrated, stable solutions of the emeraldine base form of polyaniline in numerous organic solvents from which coatings, films and fibers are readily prepared without problems associated with rapid gelation which occurs when concentrated solutions are attempted without the use of the gel inhibitors of the present invention. Polyaniline-based optical ammonia detector

Electronic absorption spectroscopy of a polyaniline film deposited on a polyethylene surface by chemical oxidation of aniline monomer at room temperature was used to quantitatively detect ammonia gas. The present optical ammonia gas detector was found to have a response time of less than 15 s, a regeneration time of less than 2 min. at room temperature, and a detection limit of 1 ppm (v/v) for ammonia, with a linear dynamic range from 180 ppm to 18,000 ppm.
