An electrothermal coating can include a nanostructure mixture randomly dispersed in a polymer matrix with more than one type of low-dimensional nanostructure. These types of low-dimensional nanostructures can include a combination of a nanospheroid plus one or both of a linear nanostructure and a planar nanostructure. Useful conductivity is achieved, while concentration of the mixed nanostructures is within the cured polymer composite coating being below the percolation limit of each individual carbon nanostructure type, alone, within an identical polymer matrix.

Compounds for novel proton conducting membranes and methods of making same

The present invention provides new compounds for use in proton exchange membranes which are able to operate in a wide variety of temperature ranges, including in the intermediate temperature range of about 100.degree. C. to 700.degree. C., and new and improved methods of making these compounds. The present invention also provides new and improved methods for making chalcogenide compounds, including, but not limited to, non-protonated sulfide, selenide and telluride compounds. In one embodiment, the proton conductivity of the compounds is between about 10.sup.-8 S/cm and 10.sup.-1 S/cm within a temperature range of between about -50 and 500.degree. C.

The invention includes compositions comprising curable imidazolium-functionalized poly(room-temperature ionic liquid) copolymers and homopolymers. The invention further includes methods of preparing and using the compositions of the invention. The invention further includes novel methods of preparing thin, supported, room-temperature ionic liquid-containing polymeric films on a porous support. In certain embodiments, the methods of the invention avoid the use of a gutter layer, which greatly reduces the overall gas permeance and selectivity of the composite membrane. In other embodiments, the films of the invention have increased gas selectivity and permeance over films prepared using methods described in the prior art.
