Abstract

A mixer-settler extractor is described for contacting immiscible liquids having different specific gravities in order to withdraw one or more components from one liquid with the aid of the other liquid. The extractor consists of a hollow column, a rotary drive shafi extending : through the column with a number of impellers spaced thereon, an equal nunnber of separator plate sets each consisting of one fluorothene and one stainless steel plate with peripheral recesses and flow slots mounted on the column, and a pulse generator. This apparatus is particularly useful in solvent extraction processes for recovering plutonium from aqueous acidic solutions of irradiated uranium.

The basis for design and scale-up of mixer-settlers for the Dapex solvent extraction process was determined by a unit operaiions study in scale model units. Rate constants for uranium extraction involving stage efficiency, phase ratio, and residence time are directly propcrtional to the cube root of power input in the mixer. Typical mixing requirements for 90% stage efficiency are 30 hp/1000 gal and 2 min residence for extraction and 0.7 hp/1000 gal and 1.5 min for stripping. The basis for design of mixer-settlers for the Amex solvent extraction process, which uses long-chain amines dissolved in a hydrocarbon diluent for the recovery of U from acid sulfate solutions typical of those obtained in U ore processing, was determined by a unit-operations study in scale-model units. Long- term recycle tests in countercurrent equipment demonstrated the stability of amines and the general feasibility of the Amex process. Mass transfer rates of U for both extraction and stripping are large, and greater than 90% stage efficiency was readily obtained. Calculation of Uranium Inventories in Mixer-Settlers During Solvent Extraction with 7.5% TBP

The computer program TRANSIENTS was used to determine the total uranium inventory in each bank of mixer-settlers during solvent extraction processing of uranium fuels with 7.5% TBP in kerosene. The resulting data were used to derive general equations for calculating the total uranium inventory in the mixer-settler banks under various operating conditions. These equations can be used in conjunction with the enrichment of the fuel being processed to calculate the inventory of fissile ²³⁵U in the banks and to establish nuclear safety controls.
