This dataset reports the characteristics of the dominant vegetation communities at the NGEE Arctic Kougarok field site, Kougarok Road Mile Marker 64 on the Seward Peninsula. Selected plots were surveyed from 18-23 July 2016. Environmental data (e.g., elevation, slope, soil moisture regime, disturbance type and degree, mean canopy height, etc.) were also recorded for each plot. Elevation measurements were updated 2020-08-18. All plant species (vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens) were recorded along with their percent cover in the plots as determined visually by the lead author. Soil cores were collected from twelve vegetation biomass plots at the Kougarok hillslope in late July of 2016. The sampled plots were located across six ecotypes present at this site (n=2 replicates per ecotype). Soil cores were separated into depth intervals in the field and frozen for transport to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The sampled plots were located across six ecotypes present at this site (n=2 replicates per ecotype). Soil cores were separated into depth intervals in the field and frozen for transport to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Laboratory sample processing of these soils generated data on soil texture, pH, gravimetric water content, bulk density, bulk soil %C and %N. Water extracts were performed on subsamples for determination of extractable total nitrogen, inorganic nitrogen, organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved organic carbon.

Transect data is from point center quarter (PCQ) surveys for shrub density performed in July 2016 at the Kougarok site and in July 2017 at the Kougarok, Teller, and Council sites. For each sample point along the transects, moving averages for shrub density and shrub basal area are provided along with GPS coordinates. Average shrub height and active layer depth are recorded for each sample point as well. Target shrub species differ across the transects: some surveys targeted a mixture of tall shrub species while others targeted specific species. In 2017 insect damage was also quantified.
