Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Biennial Environmental Compliance Report

This biennial environmental compliance report (BECR), the eighth to be issued, documents United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) compliance with environmental regulations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), a facility designed and authorized for the safe disposal of transuranic (TRU) radioactive waste and mixed TRU waste. TRU waste is radioactive waste that contains alpha-emitting radionuclides of atomic number greater than 92, with half lives longer than 20 years, and which are present in concentrations greater than 100 nanocuries per gram of waste. The BECR meets the requirements of the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act (LWA) (Public Law [Pub. L.] 102-579, as amended by Pub. L. 104-201, WIPP Land Withdrawal Act Amendments of 1996.
