Abstract

Viscosities of water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide have been measured at elevated pressures and temperatures in the diamond-anvil cell. A strong correlation between viscosity and entropy has been confirmed.

  • This is the final report from SDSC and UC Davis on DE-FC02-01ER25486, Scientific Data Management Integrated Software Infrastructure Center (SDM/ISIC): Scientific Process Automation (SPA).
  • The XVis project brings together the key elements of research to enable scientific discovery at extreme scale. Scientific computing will no longer be purely about how fast computations can be performed. Energy constraints, processor changes, and I/O limitations necessitate significant changes in both the software applications used in scientific computation and the ways in which scientists use them. Components for modeling, simulation, analysis, and visualization must work together in a computational ecosystem, rather than working independently as they have in the past.   • The Salton Sea Scientific g Project (SSSDP) completed the first major well in the United States Continental Scientific Drilling Program. The well (State 2-14) was drilled to 10,W ft (3,220 m) in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field in California`s Imperial Valley, to permit scientific study of a deep, high-temperature portion of an active geothermal system. The program was designed to investigate, through drilling and testing, the subsurface thermal, chemical, and mineralogical environments of this geothermal area. Extensive samples and data, including cores, cuttings, geothermal fluids and gases, and geophysical logs, were collected for future scientific analysis, interpretation, and publication. Shortmore » duration flow tests were conducted on reservoirs at a depth of approximately 6,120 ft (1,865 m) and at 10,136 ft (3,089 m). This report summarizes all major activities of the SSSDP, from project inception in the fall of 1984 through brine-pond cleanup and site restoration, ending in February 1989. This report presents a balanced summary of drilling, coring, logging, and flow-test operations, and a brief summary of technical and scientific results. Frequent reference is made to original records, data, and publication of results. The report also reviews the proposed versus the final well design, and operational summaries, such as the bit record, the casing and cementing program, and the coring program.   • The research that was supported by AFOSR Grant 80-0076 was divided into three areas: (1) Anomalous dc resistivity ; (2) turbulent plasma heating due to double layers; and (3) X-ray production from a very high power z-pinch. The accomplishments in each area are reviewed.
  • The Laboratory for Image and Signal Analysis conducts a broad program of research in computer vision, image processing, and architectures for image processing. During the period of this report, several projects were completed including those on positioning and tracking of objects moving in space, parallel image processing, 3-D representation, and recognition from range data and a normalized quadtree representation. A new approach to the problem of tracking of objects in space is formulated which is significantly simpler and robust in solution. Previously available quadtree description of objects is modified to develop a new description called normalized quadtree representation. This representationmore » is found to be compact as well as useful recognition of objects. A methodology for analysis of architectures for parallel image processing is proposed. Our research advocates an application-drive approach for using parallel architectures for image processing.« less
