The reaction of CH{sub 3} with O{sub 2} has been studied in a reflected shock tube apparatus between 1600 and 2100 K. CH{sub 3} was prepared from the fast thermal decomposition of CH{sub 3}I and O atom atomic resonance absorption spectrometry (ARAS) was used to observe absolute [O]{sub t}. [CH{sub 3}I]{sub 0} was sufficiently low so that most secondary reactions were negligible, allowing for unambiguous determination of the rate constant for CH{sub 3} + O{sub 2} {yields} CH{sub 3}O + O. Temperature dependence for the absolute rate constant for the reaction CH/sub 2/OH + O/sub 2/. -->. HO/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/CO from 215 to 300 K

The absolute rate constant for the reaction CH/sub 2/OH + O/sub 2/ ..-->.. HO/sub 2/ + H/sub 2/CO has been determined from 215 to 300 K in a discharge flow system at 1-Torr pressure. The decay of CH/sub 2/OH was monitored in excess O/sub 2/ by collision-free sampling mass spectrometry. The temperature dependence observed is quite different from the usual Arrhenius form. For the 215-250 K interval, an activation energy of 3.4 kcal/mol is obtained. Above 250 K, the rate constant increases at a slower rate; previous high-temperature studies (1000-2000 K) again show a faster increase in the rate constant.more »« less

The potential energy surface of the reaction H+O{sub 2}HO{sub 2} is characterized by ab initio calculations. Based on these results, classical trajectory calculations of the capture of T, D, H, and muonium by O{sub 2}2 are made. Thermal rate constants as well as energy- and angular momentum-specific rate constants are determined. The calculated high pressure recombination rate constants at 300 K agree well with the limited experimental information available so far which gives confidence in the computed temperature dependence (calculations over the temperature range 30 to 5000 K).
