Four ferritic alloys based on the composition Fe-14Cr-3W-0.4Ti (nominal wt.%) were developed with a predominant dispersion of either oxide particles or nano-size Y-,Ti-,O-rich clusters, or nanoclusters (NC). Tensile specimens machined from the alloys were tested at room temperature and at temperatures ranging from ~360 C to 800 C in air using a strain rate of 10 3s 1. The results showed that the high-temperature strength of the NC strengthened alloys was significantly better than that of the oxide strengthened alloys. Development of porosity in an oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic alloy containing nanoscale oxide particles

The development of porosity at 1000 C in an oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic alloy containing ultra-fine oxide particles with diameters on the order of a few nm is investigated. A comparison with an alloy fabricated by internal oxidation demonstrates that the porosity formation is associated with mechanical alloying with Y2O3 in argon. The pores grow in spite of a sub-micron grain size suggesting that the grain boundaries are not effective paths for removing entrapped gas from the pores.

Effect of aluminizing of Cr-containing ferritic alloys on the seal strength of a novel high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell sealing glass

A novel high-temperature alkaline-earth silicate sealing glass was developed for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications. The glass was used to join two metallic coupons of Cr-containing ferritic stainless steel for seal strength evaluation. In previous work, SrCrO4 was found to form along the glass/steel interface, which led to severe strength degradation. In the present study, aluminization of the steel surface was investigated as a remedy to minimize or prevent the strontium chromate formation.
