  • This study provides atomic scale insight to understand the role of aliovalent dopants on oxygen vacancies clustering and dissociation mechanism in ceria system in order to enhance the performance of oxy-ion conductor. Dopants induced microscale changes in ceria are probed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge spectra, and Raman spectroscopy. The results are explored to establish a correlation between atomic level structural changes (coordination number, interatomic spacing) → formation of dimer and trimer type cation-oxygen vacancies defect complex (intrinsic and extrinsic) → dissociation of oxygen vacancies from defect cluster → ionic conductivity temperature. It ismore » a strategic approach to understand key physics of ionic conductivity mechanism in order to reduce operating temperature of electrolytes for intermediate temperature (300–450 °C) electrochemical devices for the first time.« less
  • The authors have used x-ray absorption to measure the binding energy, x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Pt particles in L-zeolite saturated with H{sub 2} at room temperature and after desorption of H{sub 2} in He. The desorption of H{sub 2} causes the particles to disorder or perhaps breakup such that the coherence required for EXAFS is lost. The shift (with respect to bulk metal) of the binding energy of the Pt in the zeolite, not stabilized by chemisorbed H{sub 2}, suggests an interaction with the zeolite support (and may reflect electronic chargemore » transfer to the Pt).« less
  • X-ray-absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended-x-ray-absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements have been performed on the calcium {ital K} edge and manganese {ital K} edge of CaF{sub 2} doped with manganese at molecular concentrations of 0.1--2.5 %. The results are compared to other measurements of the calcium {ital K} edge in CaF{sub 2} and the Mn {ital K} edge in various manganese compounds. Major features in the XANES spectra are tentatively identified with transitions to high-symmetry points of the CaF{sub 2} energy bands in a one-electron picture. Expected deviations from the structure predicted by the one-electron formalism are discussed. The EXAFS analysismore » shows a reduction in the manganese-fluorine distance of (3.9{plus minus}0.4)% as compared to the calcium-fluorine separation in the doped or undoped samples. This compares well with previous results obtained by EPR. A significant increase in disorder of the first shell around the Mn dopant ion is observed as compared to the Ca ion. The significance of this shell contraction and disorder is discussed in terms of possible defect structures in the material.« less
  • The mononuclear nonheme iron active site of N694C soybean lipoxygenase (sLO1) has been investigated in the resting ferrous form using a combination of Fe-K-pre-edge, near-edge (using the minuit X-ray absorption near-edge full multiple-scattering approach), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) methods. The results indicate that the active site is six-coordinate (6C) with a large perturbation in the first-shell bond distances in comparison to the more ordered octahedral site in wild-type sLO1. Upon mutation of the asparigine to cystiene, the short Fe-O interaction with asparigine is replaced by a weak Fe-(H{sub 2}O), which leads to a distorted 6C site withmore » an effective 5C ligand field. In addition, it is shown that near-edge multiple scattering analysis can give important three-dimensional structural information, which usually cannot be accessed using EXAFS analysis. It is further shown that, relative to EXAFS, near-edge analysis is more sensitive to partial coordination numbers and can be potentially used as a tool for structure determination in a mixture of chemical species.« less
