Title: Mixing and CP violation in the D0 and B0(s) systems

Abstract

Recent developments for mixing and CP violation in the D0 and Bs systems are reviewed, including (i) the recently emerging evidence for D0-D0bar mixing and the interpretations of the measurements; (ii) the theoretical status of the calculations of Delta(Gamma_D) and Delta(m_D); (iii) some implications of the measurement of Bs mixing for new physics.

  • The authors present preliminary results of a search for direct CP violation in D{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -} {pi}{sup +} decays using 87 fb{sup -1} of data acquired by the Babar experiment running on and near the {Upsilon}(4S) from 1999-2002. The authors report the asymmetries in the signal mode and in the main resonant subchannels. Based on the same dataset, they also report a new 90% CL upper limit of 0.0042 on the rate of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing using the decay modes D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}, D{sup 0} {yields} [K/K*]ev (+c.c.).
  • The CDF collaboration presents prospects for updating previous measurements of charm mixing and CP violation with a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 fb{sup -1}. We previously reported evidence for D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} mixing with a significance equivalent to 3.8 standard deviations based on the time-dependent ratio of the decay rates for D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}, and charge-conjugates. That measurement was based on an integrated luminosity of 1.5 fb{sup -1} and achieved sensitivities of {+-} 0.35 x 10{sup -3} and {+-}7.6 x 10{sup -3} on themore » mixing parameters x'{sup 2} and y', respectively. A different analysis measured CP-violating asymmetries in D*-tagged D{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays, where any enhancement from the standard model prediction (of the order of 10{sup -3}) would be unambiguous evidence for New Physics. A technique combining asymmetries of {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, and K{sup 0}{pi}{sup +} D{sup 0} decays highly suppresses systematic uncertainties due to detector charge-asymmetric efficiencies allowing a measurement limited only by statistical uncertainties.« less
  • We begin with a brief presentation of the phenomenology of D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} mixing. This is followed by a summary of experimental results in various final states. In particular, we will first describe the discovery of D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} mixing by BaBar and Belle using two-body decay modes, and follow this with more recent studies in three-body decay modes. Finally, we will mention semileptonic searches for D{sup 0} - {bar D}{sup 0} mixing and end with a summary of all experimental results.
  • A D0 analysis measuring the charge asymmetry A{sub sl}{sup b} of like-sign dimuon events due to semileptonic b-hadron decays at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is described. It differs by 3.2 standard deviations from the Standard Model prediction to provide first evidence of CPT-invariant anomalous CP violation in the mixing of neutral B mesons, and is compared to the CP-violating phase obtained from a D0 analysis of the time-dependent decay angles in B{sub s}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}{phi}. If CPT violation is allowed, the dimuon asymmetry also yields the first sensitivity to CPT violation in the B{sub s}{sup 0} system.
