Title: Foreign Trip Report MATGEN-IV Sep 24- Oct 26, 2007

Abstract

Gen-IV activities in France, Japan and US focus on the development of new structural materials for Gen-IV nuclear reactors. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) F/M steels have raised considerable interest in nuclear applications. Promising collaborations can be established seeking fundamental knowledge of relevant Gen-IV ODS steel properties (see attached travel report on MATGEN- IV 'Materials for Generation IV Nuclear Reactors'). Major highlights refer to results on future Ferritic/Martensitic steel cladding candidates (relevant to Gen-IV materials properties for LFR Materials Program) and on thermodynamic and mechanic behavior of metallic FeCr binary alloys, base matrix for future candidate steels (for the LLNL-LDRD project on Critical Issues on Materials for Gen-IV Reactors).

  • This trip was initiated by a request from IAEA for USA expert assistance in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) had acquired a 3MW TRIGA MARK-II research reactor and their specialist needed help in the development of computer codes and data for the effective utilization and analysis of their reactor. Nuclear data recognized as an international standard was installed on a BAEC computer at Savar. The traveler was invited to China (PRC) to discuss multigroup cross section processing methods used at ORNL. Also, the traveler participated in a US-Japan workshop on fusion neutronics at Osaka University where he discussedmore » the activities of RSIC. An orientation visit to JAERI resulted in the collection of information of potential use in US DOE programs, a better understanding of their research activities, and an opportunity to develop personal relationships with JAERI staff.« less
  • On May 14, the traveler left for Santo Domingo to gather data and negotiate the terms of a project agreement with the Asociacion de la Desarrollo de la Provincia Duarte in San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Interviews with Asociacion management, local vendors and others involved in dissemination of small energy systems in the rural areas in the Dominican Republic, were held over a one week period. The terms of the project were discussed at length, concerns noted and an agreement was reached on a number of key items. A strategy and schedule were determined.   • The traveler presented a progress report to personnel at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), Tokai Establishment, on work carried out at ORNL under the Japan/US Actinides Program. He also briefed personnel at Nagoya University and the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI). He developed a draft of the work plan for Japanese approval and funding during the ensuing Japanese fiscal year. He spent one day at the Tokyo Institute of Technology to work on a joint research paper.
  • This trip was a continuation of the sampling program undertaken during 1984--1985 to study the seasonal and regional variability of CO/sub 2/ chemistry in high latitude deep water formation areas of the North Pacific. The work is conducted by Columbia University (Dr. Taro Takahashi, Principal Investigator) for the Department of Energy's Energy Systems Program managed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Aboard the PRESIDENT ARTHUR, surface seawater samples were collected at forty-one stations along the route from Oakland, California, to Keeling, Taiwan, via Guam.   • A meeting of the Technical Program Committee for the ENS/ANS International Conference on Thermal Reactor Safety was held to develop the detailed technical organizational structure of the conference and to review and determine the disposition of over 320 papers which had been proposed for presentation. In addition, a meeting was held with staff of The Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique to discuss the French reactor safety research program.
