Title: Multiphase flow calculation software

Abstract

Multiphase flow calculation software and computer-readable media carrying computer executable instructions for calculating liquid and gas phase mass flow rates of high void fraction multiphase flows. The multiphase flow calculation software employs various given, or experimentally determined, parameters in conjunction with a plurality of pressure differentials of a multiphase flow, preferably supplied by a differential pressure flowmeter or the like, to determine liquid and gas phase mass flow rates of the high void fraction multiphase flows. Embodiments of the multiphase flow calculation software are suitable for use in a variety of applications, including real-time management and control of an object system.

  • This patent describes a method for determining the mass flow rate of the components of a multiphase fluid flowstream comprising at least one gas and at least two liquids of different densities comprising the steps of: providing conduit means for conducting the fluid flowstream from a source of the fluid flowstream to a point of delivery, the conduit means including means forming a conduit section for substantially changing the direction of flow of the fluid flowstream, means for treating a sample of the fluid flowstream to separate the gas from the liquid mixture, means for determining the total density ofmore » the fluid flowstream and means for determining the respective fractions of at least two liquids in the liquid mixture; measuring the total density of the fluid flowstream; conducting the fluid flowstream through the conduit section for changing the direction of flow and measuring the pressure differential encountered as a result of the change of direction of the fluid flowstream; determining the flow are of the conduit section through which the flowstream is conducted to undergo the change of pressure as a result of the change of direction and determining the total mass flow rate of the fluid flowstream based on the change in pressure, the total density, and the flow area.« less
  • An improved method and system for measuring a multiphase flow in a pressure flow meter. An extended throat venturi is used and pressure of the multiphase flow is measured at three or more positions in the venturi, which define two or more pressure differentials in the flow conduit. The differential pressures are then used to calculate the mass flow of the gas phase, the total mass flow, and the liquid phase. The method for determining the mass flow of the high void fraction fluid flow and the gas flow includes certain steps. The first step is calculating a gas densitymore » for the gas flow. The next two steps are finding a normalized gas mass flow rate through the venturi and computing a gas mass flow rate. The following step is estimating the gas velocity in the venturi tube throat. The next step is calculating the pressure drop experienced by the gas-phase due to work performed by the gas phase in accelerating the liquid phase between the upstream pressure measuring point and the pressure measuring point in the venturi throat. Another step is estimating the liquid velocity in the venturi throat using the calculated pressure drop experienced by the gas-phase due to work performed by the gas phase. Then the friction is computed between the liquid phase and a wall in the venturi tube. Finally, the total mass flow rate based on measured pressure in the venturi throat is calculated, and the mass flow rate of the liquid phase is calculated from the difference of the total mass flow rate and the gas mass flow rate.« less

  • A time lapse electric logging method is described where self potential measurements are utilized to determine steam quality comprising: (a) measuring electric self potential via a wellbore at various levels in a formation where it is desired to inject steam; (b) thereafter injecting steam into said levels via the wellbore while measuring electric self potential at said levels; (c) using any measurements of increased electric self potential at each level to detect continuously two-phase steam flow; and (d) thereafter using measurements of a decrease in electric self potential at a level to detect one-phase steam flow thus indicating where steammore » breakthrough has occurred at a level and that steam quality at a level has increased because of a change from two-phase steam flow to one-phase steam flow.« less
