Transfer of a polarized proton beam from AGS to RHIC.
As part of the RHIC Project, the RHIC machine will be injected from AGS machine with a polarized proton beam, via the AtR (AGS to RHIC) beam transfer line. The layout of the beam bending elements of the AtR transfer line is such that the stable spin direction of a polarized proton beam, at the RHIC injection point, depends on the proton energy, as well as the stable spin direction of the proton beam at AGS. Since the stable spin direction of a polarized proton beam in RHIC is along the vertical, a study has been made, and the results will be presented, of the stable spin direction of a polarized proton beam at the RHIC injection point over the range of the possible proton injection energies. A modification of the AtR transfer line will also be discussed. This modification makes the AtR transfer line ''tunable'' for optimum beam polarization transfer from AGS to RHIC over the possible range of the proton injection energies. Results of the stable spin direction at the RHIC injection point for a particular ''polarization transfer tune'' of the modified AtR transfer line, will be presented.
