Title: Dalitz plot analysis of the D+ ---> K- pi+ pi+ decay in the FOCUS experiment

Abstract

Using data collected by the high energy photoproduction experiment FOCUS at Fermilab we performed a Dalitz plot analysis of the Cabibbo favored decay D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. This study uses 53653 Dalitz-plot events with a signal fraction of {approx} 97%, and represents the highest statistics, most complete Dalitz plot analysis for this channel. Results are presented and discussed using two different formalisms. The first is a simple sum of Breit-Wigner functions with freely fitted masses and widths. It is the model traditionally adopted and serves as comparison with the already published analyses. The second uses a K-matrix approach for the dominant S-wave, in which the parameters are fixed by first fitting K{pi} scattering data and continued to threshold by Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show that the Dalitz plot distribution for this decay is consistent with the assumption of two body dominance of the final state interactions and the description of these interactions is in agreement with other data on the K{pi} final state.

  • It is shown that it is possible to perform a model-independent extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle {gamma} using only the decays B{sup 0{yields}}DK{sup +{pi}-} with D{yields}K{sub S}{sup 0{pi}+{pi}-} and B{sup 0{yields}}DK{sup +{pi}-} with flavor-specific D decays. The proposed method can also utilize the B{sup 0{yields}}DK{sup +{pi}-} data with CP-eigenstate decays of the D meson in a model-independent way.
  • We perform a Dalitz plot analysis of D{sup +}{yields}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} decay with the CLEO-c data set of 572 pb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions accumulated at the {psi}(3770). This corresponds to 1.6x10{sup 6} D{sup +}D{sup -} pairs from which we select 140 793 candidate events with a small background of 1.1%. We compare our results with previous measurements using the isobar model. We modify the isobar model with an improved description of some of the contributing resonances and get better agreement with our data. We also consider a quasi-model-independent approach and measure the magnitude and phase ofmore » the contributing K{pi} S wave in the range of invariant masses from the threshold to the maximum in this decay. This gives an improved description of our data over the isobar model. Finally we allow for an isospin-two {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} S wave contribution and find that adding this to both the isobar model and the quasi-model-independent approach gives the best description of our data.« less
  • We report on an improved measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating phase {gamma} through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D meson decays to K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sup +}K{sup -} produced in the processes B{sup {+-}}{yields}DK{sup {+-}}, B{sup {+-}}{yields}D*K{sup {+-}} with D*{yields}D{pi}{sup 0}, D{gamma}, and B{sup {+-}}{yields}DK*{sup {+-}} with K*{sup {+-}}{yields}K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup {+-}}. Using a sample of 383x10{sup 6} BB pairs collected by the BABAR detector, we measure {gamma}=(76{+-}22{+-}5{+-}5) deg. (mod 180 deg.), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third reflects the uncertainty on the descriptionmore » of the Dalitz plot distributions. The corresponding 2-standard-deviation region is 29 deg. <{gamma}<122 deg. This result has a significance of direct CP violation ({gamma}{ne}0) of 3.0 standard deviations.« less

  • The resonant substructure in D{sup 0}{yields}K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays is described by a combination of ten quasi two-body intermediate states which include both CP-even and CP-odd eigenstates and one doubly Cabibbo suppressed channel. We present a formalism that connects the variation in D{sup 0} decay time over the Dalitz plot with the mixing parameters, x and y, that describe off-shell and on-shell D{sup 0}-D{sup 0} mixing. We analyze the CLEO II.V data sample and find the parameters x and y are consistent with zero. We limit (-4.5<x<9.3)% and (-6.4<y<3.6)% at the 95% confidence level.
